A SEDONA STAPLE
Founded in 2011, Thunder Mountain Bikes set up shop in the picturesque town of Sedona with a vision to grow and nurture the local cycling scene. A decade later, the shop has more than achieved that goal—becoming a beloved gathering place for both locals and visitors. Starting out in their now iconic brick building in West Sedona, Thunder Mountain has expanded their rental fleet fivefold and doubled their team. Today, they boast the largest selection of mountain bike components, accessories, and apparel in Northern Arizona.
Thunder Mountain Bikes isn’t just a bike shop—it’s the epicenter of Sedona’s mountain biking world, a shop built by riders, for riders. With a staff full of passionate cyclists, mechanics, and outdoor enthusiasts, their mission has always been to share the beauty and adventure of Sedona’s world-class trails with everyone who walks through their doors.
"Many places have good trails, or pretty scenery, or easy access to riding—it’s the convergence of all three that sets Sedona apart."
COMMUNITY ROOTS
Beyond bikes, Thunder Mountain is a central part of the local mountain biking community. The shop plays a pivotal role in supporting Sedona’s renowned trail system, with countless hours dedicated to trail building, volunteering, and sponsorships. They are proud sponsors of the Sedona Mountain Bike Festival, a highlight of the year that turns Sedona into an MTB mecca each March. Whether it's maintaining trails or organizing group rides, Thunder Mountain has firmly established itself as a shop that gives back to the very trails they love to ride.
Favorite Trail from Town / Lunch Ride:
One of the best things about riding in Sedona is that most trails start right from town. Iconic trails like Hangover and Hiline are just a short pedal away from the shop, making it easy to squeeze in a quick loop or dive into an all-day adventure. Whether you're after technical descents or sweeping red-rock views, Sedona's trails deliver.
Pre-Ride Ritual:
For those early morning start times, the crew’s caffeination station of choice is Freeform Coffee Roasters. Located in Sedona’s Gallery District, Freeform sources some of the best beans in the world, hand-roasting them weekly for peak freshness. It’s the perfect spot to grab a quick coffee before hitting the trails.
Favorite Watering Hole:
After a day of shredding, nothing beats an ice-cold craft beer. The team’s top pick? Sedona Beer Co., an uptown ale house known for its microbrewed craft beers and hearty post-ride comfort food. Whether you’re craving chorizo mac and cheese or a refreshing hard kombucha, Sedona Beer Co. has you covered.
Recommended Restaurants:
Sedona is a food lover's paradise, and picking a favorite is tough. The team at Thunder Mountain Bikes has compiled a list of their must-visit spots for trail-side bites and post-ride feasts. From wood-fired pizzas to gourmet burgers, check out their full list of recommended eateries here.
"Featuring a web of intersections, it's easy to string together incredible and iconic rides, with many of them starting only a quick ride from our shop's front door."
LOCAL TIPS & BETA
If you're visiting in the summer and need a break from the heat, a dip in Oak Creek is a refreshing way to cool off after a long day on the bike. The lush creekside offers a peaceful escape from the desert sun. And if you're lucky enough to be in town in March, don’t miss the Sedona MTB Festival—a three-day celebration of mountain biking that draws riders from across the country. You might even catch the Club Ride team there too.
